Sleep
Apnea
Sleep apnea is defined as cessation of airflow at the nose and
the mouth during sleep. Disturbances in sleep have profound clinical
and behavioral implications on our daily living that most people
inflicted with the disease are unaware of its consequences.
There are
two major types of sleep apnea: Obstructive
Sleep Apnea which
refers to the occurrence of episodes of complete or partial upper
airway obstruction at the oropharyngeal level during sleep, and
Central Sleep
Apnea which refers
to the cessation of breathing and airflow because of transient
loss of drive to all respiratory muscles.
